Dark circles can make the eyes look tired even when you feel fresh and well rested. But not all under-eye shadows are the same – and neither are their causes.
Pigmentation, visible blood vessels, very thin skin, puffiness or a pronounced tear trough can each contribute to a darker-looking under-eye area, either on their own or in combination. This is why not every visible shadow is equally suited to pigmentation.
Where the underlying colour is suitable, Permanent Concealer can be used to soften dark tones and reduce their visual contrast. The aim is not to create an opaque layer of makeup, but a natural-looking camouflage that blends harmoniously with your skin tone.
Whether the treatment makes sense for your particular starting point is something I always assess individually.
Permanent Concealer – tailored to your under-eye area
Permanent Concealer is a specialised camouflage pigmentation for the under-eye area. Carefully selected pigments are used to soften suitable dark tones and create a more seamless transition into the surrounding skin tone.
I don’t work to a fixed formula. Different pigmentation approaches and pigment systems may be appropriate depending on your skin, your starting point and the effect you want to achieve. What matters is that the shade, intensity and technique are right for your individual under-eye area.
Alongside classic Permanent Concealer pigmentation, I also work with an approach based on a method developed by Brazilian tattoo and camouflage specialist Rodolpho Torres. This variation uses specially selected UV-transmissive pigments.
Which approach makes the most sense for you is decided after assessing your skin, the tones present in the under-eye area and your personal preferences.
Two approaches – one individual aim
Classic Permanent Concealer pigmentation
With classic camouflage, the pigment colour is individually matched to your skin tone and the existing shades beneath the eyes. Both colour and intensity are built gradually and with control, with the aim of softening the visible contrast in the under-eye area as harmoniously as possible.
Camouflage with UV-transmissive specialist pigments
For this variation, I work with specialist UV-transmissive pigments as part of a camouflage technique based on the method developed by Rodolpho Torres. The aim is again to create a natural-looking colour balance, while taking the particular properties of the pigment system into account during treatment planning.
The specialist pigments used with this approach are UV-transmissive. This is a characteristic of the specific pigment system used for this camouflage method and distinguishes it from classic Permanent Concealer pigmentation.
Which method suits you best cannot be decided by the name of a technique alone. Your skin type, undertone, the nature of the under-eye shadow, the colour effect you want and your personal preferences all play a part in choosing the right approach.
What Permanent Concealer can – and cannot – change
Permanent Concealer works through colour. Where the underlying tones are suitable, pigmentation can soften their appearance and reduce the visible contrast between the under-eye shadow and the surrounding skin.
What pigmentation cannot change is the anatomy of the under-eye area. A pronounced tear trough, loss of volume or puffiness cannot be filled or removed with Permanent Concealer.
That distinction is exactly why I look closely before recommending treatment. Is the visible shadow mainly caused by colour, or does it come predominantly from the shape and depth of the under-eye area? I only recommend camouflage pigmentation when it genuinely makes sense for your starting point.

When might Permanent Concealer be suitable?
Permanent Concealer may be an option when the visible shadow beneath the eyes is caused to a significant degree by differences in colour and both the skin and starting point are suitable for pigmentation.
It may be particularly worth considering if you would like to soften dark tones and create a more natural-looking balance without having to cover the area heavily with concealer every day.
What you want from the treatment matters too. Some people are looking for only the most subtle harmonisation; others would like a more noticeable colour correction. We discuss beforehand what is both realistic and appropriate for your skin.
If there is pronounced puffiness, a clearly defined tear trough, an acute skin or eye problem, or another unexplained change in the area, pigmentation is not automatically the right solution. In these cases, a medical assessment may be advisable first.
Your Permanent Concealer treatment, step by step
Careful assessment and a controlled build-up of colour are particularly important with Permanent Concealer. A new pigmentation treatment therefore consists of an initial treatment followed by the scheduled perfection appointment around six weeks later.
Depending on your starting point and the healed result, an additional final session may occasionally be useful afterwards.
Six steps to a fresher look
Consultation & skin assessment
We begin with a close assessment of your under-eye area. I look at the visible colour tones, your natural skin tone and skin condition, as well as whether the shadow appears to be mainly colour-related or more strongly influenced by the anatomy of the area.
Together, we discuss the result you would like to achieve and which form of Permanent Concealer pigmentation may be appropriate for your starting point.
Colour planning & treatment area
I then select the shade and pigment system individually, taking into account your skin tone, the existing colour tones and the approach we have chosen. The precise area to be pigmented is also carefully defined.
The aim is not maximum coverage, but a controlled reduction in the visible colour contrast.
Preparation & anaesthesia
The delicate under-eye area is carefully prepared and hygienically cleansed. If needed and suitable, a topical anaesthetic can be used to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.
Pigmentation
The individually selected pigments are then applied precisely and with control to the defined treatment area.
I build the colour gradually and deliberately. Restraint is particularly important with skin-toned camouflage pigments, so that once healed, the result blends as harmoniously as possible with the natural appearance of your skin.
Healing & aftercare
Immediately after treatment, the under-eye area may be slightly red or swollen. The pigmentation itself may also appear more intense or simply different from the final healed result at first.
Over the following days, the skin may begin to flake lightly or fine crusts may form. Please allow these to come away naturally and avoid rubbing the treated area.
During the early healing phase, it is important to follow your individual aftercare instructions carefully. Makeup, intensive skincare products, swimming, sauna, solarium and strong mechanical irritation should initially be avoided in the treated area.
The colour continues to change as the skin heals. The result is therefore assessed only once the regeneration process is complete.
Scheduled perfection appointment
Around six weeks later, I assess the healed result. At this point, I can see how the shade, intensity and transitions have developed and where any targeted refinement may still be appropriate.
This scheduled perfection appointment is part of every new pigmentation treatment and is already included in the treatment price.
Only if an additional final perfection session is appropriate afterwards because of your individual starting point or the result you want – or if you specifically request one – is that further appointment charged separately.
How long does Permanent Concealer last?
Permanent Concealer is designed as a long-lasting pigmentation. Exactly how long the colour remains visible and harmonious, however, cannot be predicted with a fixed number of years for every skin.
Skin condition, the pigment blend, UV exposure, metabolism and the way the colour develops individually all influence how the pigmentation changes over time.
For that reason, a refresh is not carried out simply according to a fixed timetable. It becomes relevant when the colour has visibly changed and a new adjustment makes sense.
